Gentleman`s Agreement is the kind of film that contains the usual drama of a Zanuck movie, but the subject is what makes the film so pioneering. Can a gentleman`s Agreement be a good movie while being too twisted? Maybe it`s because I look back on it today, but gentleman`s Agreement mostly plays hokey and sermons. The film is as powerful today as it was at the Award for Best Picture a few years after the end of the Hitler genocide in Europe. . This powerful film remains one of the most instructive attacks on racism ever shot. . Much of the “message” is lost in a series of words. The atmosphere is as widespread as we would like our butter rationed. . The film is awesome and worth seeing. . It was staged with a rare understanding of Elia Kazan.
. . . Sometimes it doesn`t live up to its subject — and perhaps an “important” film more than a “big one” — but the performances of Gregory Peck and Dorothy McGuire are excellent. . Here`s a great and moving film — the best that`s come from an American studio in a few years.
